What is NLP and Whata Can it Do for You?
Anita Burns
The most frequently asked question about NLP is, “What is it?” That may be the most difficult question to answer since “Which came first, the Chicken or the Egg?”
NLP has been described as a study of the mind’s subjective behavior. The study of the process of learning; tools for change; the owners manual for the mind; etc.,
While all of these are correct, none of them are complete.
With NLP You Can . . .
Have Personal empowerment.
Become skillful with communication and negotiation.
Develop masterful and skillful communication and negotiation skills.
Move out of "stuck" emotions, erase painful memories, and be free of crippling childhood imprinting.
Go beyond any emotional and intellectual limitations.
Know how to make practices such as affirmations, goal setting, and meditation, really work.
Eliminate unwanted behaviors, habits, and ingrained patterns that you back from being fully successful in life.
Learn how to run your life instead of your life running you.
Your mind is the most valuable tool you have for growth and success. But for most people the mind, like an unruly child, rules your emotions, and constantly pulls your attention in a thousand different directions. How often have you had an unpleasant experience, perhaps a bad interaction with someone at work, and your mind won't let you drop it. It runs it over and over in your brain, bringing up all the horrible emotions, perhaps even escalating them. The incident is over and done with, you should be able to let it go and get on with life. But NO! Your mind may never let you do that. Years later, something could trigger that memory and your mind says "Oh boy! Let's feel bad all over again. So what if it's been three years."
If you are like most people, you are a prisoner of your own chaotic mind. Sometimes the mind doesn't even need a real event to make you feel bad. Your mind can anticipate a possible disaster or unpleasantness and not wait for it to really happen, but make you feel bad right away. So even if the bad event never happens, we are able to feel rotten anyway.
This can work the other way too. How many times has your mind anticipated something pleasurable to such an exaggerated degree that the actual experience was a let down? Christmas is an example for some people; so are first dates, celebrations, vacations, sensual pleasures, and surprises from others you know are coming. NLP is a way of taking charge of the feelings, pictures, and sounds your mind pumps into your consciousness. This leaves the way clear for clear thinking and personal power to come in unhindered by mind static and chaotic emotions.
With NLP you can learn to be in charge of your mind and emotions in the best possible way, making it the powerful tool it was meant to be. The way to success and fulfillment is to take control of your mind and emotions.
Minds are phenomenal things. No computer can come close to the power and complexity of human thinking. The problem is that, as human beings, we are taught how to use physical/digital skills--how to master physical movement--—but our brains are left to chance learning. We pump certain skills into it such as information, math, and socially acceptable vs. unacceptable behavior, religious or spiritual concepts. But we aren't taught how to not learn something harmful or how to unlearn something we don't want to think or feel. Our minds are vast learning machines and they learn the garbage along with the good stuff.
Phobias are an excellent example. Psychologists, et al, have made a big deal about phobias, and people spend years and thousands of dollars to get rid of phobias. In reality, phobias are concentrated learning experiences. The brain learned to be afraid of something. A phobic never forgets to be afraid of whatever the phobia is about. Phobias are thorough learning.
We learn so easily, but don't know how to learn selectively. The mind pulls us here and there, willy nilly. What the mind takes in runs our emotions, and emotions run behavior. Thoughts and experiences get linked and become beliefs and behaviors.
Have you ever have bad experiences with a food years ago and still have nasty feelings when thinking about it? Do you have a song that brings back good feelings from the past?
By knowing how you learn, how the mind runs the show, how experiences get linked to create behavior, beliefs and feelings, you can be in control of your life and get anything you want from it.
Ever wonder how it is that talented, attractive, intelligent people can feel worthless? Ever wonder how untalented, intellectually lame people can feel so arrogant and self-important? Mind Maps! How you feel inside creates beliefs about yourself. These beliefs are often imprinted in childhood, in the womb, or are carry-overs from past lives. NLP can unlock the patterns and allow you to change them.
You can do this through a step-by-step process of learning and unlearning; learning the subjective (personal, emotional) experience of yourself and others around you; separating out the component parts of your life experience from who you really are. Then through precise tools and techniques, learn to change the behaviors and feelings you don't want into those that you do want.
To do this you must first accept that you are not your thoughts, emotions, feelings, beliefs and behaviors. You are something greater. Thoughts, emotions, feelings, beliefs and behaviors are layers put on you as tools to get you through the learning experiences of life. And these things have been learned throughout your life or lives and can be unlearned or changed. To open the opportunities that lay ahead of you in this training, accept that your subjective experience has discoverable and manipulatable structure.
You must realize that TRUTH is a subjective experience. Truth and beliefs are largely not about reality, but about consensual, or shared reality. If enough people believe something to be true, it is accepted as a truth. If only one believes it, it is considered delusional or fantasy. Einstein had a hallucination about riding through space on a beam of light. He was a scientist and couched his hallucination in the shared reality of scientific terms and the theory of relativity was born. If someone outside the shared reality frame had the same hallucination, he would be considered a lunatic or on drugs.
This NLP training is a path toward running your own mind, changing yourself to make a more harmonious whole, and opening the way for more purely spiritual energy to flow through you. The training is divided into component parts that will fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. You may pick up a piece and not immediately see or know where it fits into the puzzle or what part of the picture it represents, but little by little the picture will emerge as a whole.
